It’s no secret that San Diegans love their sports. San Diego Padres and San Diego Chargers fans will tell you that supporting their San Diego sports team is not just a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. College teams and lesser known San Diego sports teams receive less attention in the national spectrum, but are no less beloved in the eyes of their fans. The amazing weather makes San Diego the ideal place to play and enjoy sports, and catch a tan in the process.

Professional San Diego Sports Teams

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres is San Diego’s beloved Major League Baseball team, presently hailing from the still-new PETCO Park in Downtown San Diego. The team joined the MLB in 1969, and has enjoyed decades of success.

San Diego Chargers

The much-revered San Diego Chargers have called San Diego and San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium home since moving from Los Angeles in the early Sixties. The National Football League team, lovingly called the “Bolts” by fans, continues to maintain a huge fan base, despite never winning a Super Bowl.

San Diego OMBAC Rugby Football Club

San Diego's Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) Rugby Football Club was formed in 1966, 12 years (1954) after the founding of OMBAC by Mike Curren and his co athletes. By 1968 it joined the first division categorized Southern California Rugby Football Union (SCRFU), and since then the club has established itself in top ranking men's rugby club competitions in the USA.

Fun Fact: San Diego OMBAC Rugby Football Club has became USA Rugby Division I Champions in the years 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1996. It also became champions in the USA Rugby National Club Sevens in the years1985, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006.

San Diego Pumitas

The Pumitas is an American soccer team that represents San Diego in the National Premier Soccer League, in the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The San Diego soccer team plays against El Paso, Carlsbad, Boulder, and Denver in the Southwest Conference, and plays its home matches in Balboa Stadium.

San Diego WFC Sealions

The Women’s Football Club Sealions call Cathedral Catholic High School home. The San Diego football team is a member of the Women’s Premier Soccer League and play teams from Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Riverside, and San Francisco. In 2000, the Sealions were named WPSL champions.

San Diego Sunwaves

The San Diego Sunwaves, a Western Conference Champion team, brings high-intensity women’s soccer to San Diego. The Sunwaves are a member of the USL’s W-League, featuring 40 of the top teams from around the nation. Catch the Sunwaves in action at Torero Stadium located on the University of San Diego campus.

San Diego Shockwaves

The San Diego Shockwaves are the new San Diego indoor football team in town and had a great inaugural season. The team has decided to lay dormant for a season until a stronger west coast division can be created. The Shockwaves plan to return to indoor football action in the 2009 season. The San Diego team is also looking into building their own sports complex compatible for indoor football in San Diego.

San Diego Wildcats

The San Diego Wildcats are a member of the American Basketball Association and play at the Joan Croc Center. The San Diego basketball team was founded in 2006 and experienced an exciting inaugural season. All basketball players on the San Diego Wildcats have professional or college experience in the game of basketball.

While UCSD lacks a collegiate football team, it excels in other sports. The UCSD surfing team has won the national title six times. UCSD participates in the NCAA’s Division II.

USD competes in the NCAA’s Division 1 level and participates in the West Coast Conference. The football team competes in the Pioneer Football League. Torero is Spanish for “bullfighter,” but the USD athletic teams were formerly called the Pioneers.
