Caring for the elderly in the city of San Diego has been taken into consideration and thus, the city and its community has created the necessary services for the old ones in order for them to live comfortably even in their old age.The City of San Diego is dedicated to benefiting the lives of local senior citizens and offers a wide variety of senior services that can positively aid their health, safety, and financial security. These services aim to provide quality and compassionate assistance, serve as the “voice” for seniors and help at-risk seniors remain healthy and independent. They strive to reach out to seniors in need through these life-changing services. Here in San Diego, we even have the annual Senior Olympics, an event that encourages lifelong fitness for senior citizens.According to a recent San Diego Mayor’s report, “Seniors are one of the fastest growing demographics within the San Diego. By 2010, the number of senior citizens aged 75 and over in San Diego County will be 81% higher than the number of seniors in 1990.”

Trash and Recycling Collection
With written notice from physician or medical provider, this service assists physically challenged seniors with moving the trash and recycling bins to the curbside for collection.
Hazardous Waste Drop Off
This service provides a door-to-door pick up service for physically challenged seniors to transport hazardous waste, such as left-over paint, pesticides, and petroleum.

San Diego Senior Games Association
Offering a series of competitive and recreational events, luncheons, and educational seminars, the San Diego Seniors Games Association encourages lifelong fitness for the 50+ population. In fact, their biggest event of the year is the Senior Olympics which takes place every September.

San Diego Library
The City’s Public Library System offers the following services to senior citizens: book delivery program for homebound seniors, books on tape, large print books, senior book discussion groups, machines to enlarge print, computer and Internet access, magnifying glasses, Internet training at the Central Library, talking books, and book players as well as multiple volunteer opportunities.

Park & Recreation with Senior Citizen Services
This service provides activities such as annual trips to Palms Spring, Lawrence Welk Resort, Julian, and Las Vegas. There are also annual special events that include Senior Photo Art Show, Senior Art Contest, Senior Talent Show, and Senior Craft Sale. Their quarterly newsletter, The Scroll, lists all of the senior activities and events.
Adult Social Daycare
Adult Social Daycare, or ASDC, is a state licensed program that serves those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or who cannot be left at home alone, preventing premature placement into long term care facilities. This service offers a warm, friendly environment with low impact exercise, sing along, music appreciation, word games, lunch, and snacks.

This center offers aerobic exercise, chair exercise, tai chi, yoga, line dancing, foreign language groups, scrabble, mah jongg lessons, bridge lessons, OASIS computer classes, and drawing/painting classes for adults 50 years and up. Also important is the AARP Driver Safety Course, free legal services, HICAP, vital sign check up program as well as tax filing assistance.

Oasis Education allows the senior community to pursue an old or new interest and offers a broad range of educational classes from the arts and humanities to wellness, fitness, and travel.

Intergenerational Project
Recognizes the mutual benefit of people interacting with their elders. There are a variety of outreach programs such as, Senior Companions that provides senior assistance to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks, Guardian Angels (volunteers) who become regular visitors and friends to residents of long-term care facilities, and Foster Grandparents which coordinates seniors serving as mentors and tutors for children and teenagers with special needs.

In Home Supportive Services (IHSS)

Family Caregiver Support Program
This program targets the needs of those who care for a family member with support groups, respite, counseling, and help with resources.
Transportation Program makes transportation more accessible and affordable for elderly individuals with specialized needs.
Aging and Independent Services
This organization serves adults 65 and older who are harmed or threatened with harm. They investigate cases of neglect, abandonment, and physical, fiduciary or sexual abuse.
Ombudsman Program provides advocates for residents in long-term care facilities who respond to and resolve complaints, act as mediators, support residents rights and witness certain legal documents.
Edgemoor Hospital provides long-term skilled nursing care for patients unable to be cared for by the private sector.
Project CARE
Project CARE is a community network program that provides an early warning of distress for frail, ill or disabled individuals living at home. The services include but are not limited to “Are you OK?” phone checks, Postal Alert, Gatekeeper, and minor home repairs.

Elderly Abuse and Legal Links
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection. Since there is no way of knowing why abuse occurs or how to stop it from continually happening, there is something we can do because help is available for victims. The different types of abuse include physical, sexual, emotional or psychological abuse, neglect, abandonment, financial or material exploitation, and self-neglect.
Elder abuse can be prevented, and at the national level, but there are also community collaborations that are playing an extremely important role in education and awareness of this problem. Elder abuse services are working to make life safer for vulnerable elders and are an important step forward in the fight against elder abuse. Here are some such coalitions and groups located in the San Diego area:
TRIAD/SALT
TRIAD/SALT is a partnership between law enforcement personnel, police chiefs and seniors with a primary goal to reduce criminal victimization of older citizens and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to this high risk population.
FAST
Better known as The Fiduciary Abuse Specialist Team, is a multidisciplinary group that meets on a monthly basis to discuss prevention, intervention and prosecution efforts in elder financial abuse cases.
Safe Seniors Coalition
Safe Seniors Coalition is a multidisciplinary group committed to public and professional education, increased prevention and prosecution efforts, and information sharing about elder physical abuse and neglect.

Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP)
