San Diego Politics and Government
From San Diego Wiki
Historically, San Diego has been a predominantly Republican city, as it was a strong ally in both Richard Nixon’s campaigns for office. Lately the political climate has been shifting toward a Democratic majority, as shown in the city council and across the totals of the registered voters with a majority being Democrats. Despite this apparent trend, the current mayor of San Diego, Mayor Jerry Sanders, is a Republican and the last Democratic mayor elected was in 1988. San Diego politicians tend to align their attentions to the dispositions of the public as well as the environment, catering to the many community and environmental needs.
San Diego Politicians
Mayor Jerry Sanders has been the current mayor of San Diego since the last mayoral election held in 2005. On September 18, 2007, the San Diego City Council voted 5-3 to endorse a pending lawsuit before the California Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 22, a highly controversial proposition that banned same-sex marriage in California that was voted for by 62 percent of voters in San Diego. The City Council acted on this endorsement with the support of Mayor Jerry Sanders.
Accompanying Mayor Sanders in office are Scott Peters, who is the city current council president, Kevin Faulconer, Toni Atkins, who was the previous mayor of San Diego, and Brian Maienschein whom also are city council members. From the courthouse where many crucial issues are debated daily to the city administration building housing the majority of the city council meetings, San Diego politicians can be found hard at work serving our community.
San Diego Political Climate
With the increasing level of diversity in San Diego brought on by the growing number of telecommunication, biotech, and other technology industries as well as the warm climate and the fact that we retain numerous immigrants from Mexico, the political climate may be set to see a 360 degree change. Currently, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by 7 to 6; the same applies in the city council where the Democrats hold a 5-3 majority. Having more growth in the technology sector has brought and will continue to bring a diverse political atmosphere to San Diego.
City of San Diego Business
San Diego’s focus on business has also changed more in these last several years then we have seen in the decades prior. With many new small businesses opening doors to their markets, they may find assistance at one of the few small business advocacies here in San Diego that are assembled to assist in the foundation and growth of new business. A shift in employment trends shows less jobs being fulfilled in the military, leading to an increasing number of telecommunications and biotech job placements.
San Diego City Hall
San Diego’s City Hall, located at address 202 C St. in downtown San Diego, is where the majority of our politicians congregate to attend to their civil duties. City council meetings are held on Mondays at 2:00 p.m. and Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. The office of ethics and integrity was established to bring a code of conduct and ethics to the city’s many employees, comments as well as suggestions are welcomed on the website or in person.

San Diego Political History
San Diego has a relatively short history in comparison to other cities in California, as well as in other states, extending just over 150 years. In the 1850s San Diego was incorporated by the California State Legislature, since then San Diegans have seen twenty Republican mayors and only eleven Democrat mayors. It was possible to consider San Diego a Republican town, yet with the onset of migratory increases brining many new immigrants from Latin America and Asia, San Diego has been becoming Democratically centralized.
