Because a car is the primary means of transportation for 80% of San Diego’s residents, the freeways and highways are extremely important to familiarize yourself with when moving to San Diego. The Interstate 5 runs south to Tijuana and north to the Canadian Border, while the Interstate 805 splits from the I-5 at Sorrento Valley and heads southeast. The Interstate 8 runs east to Imperial County and Arizona and the Interstate 15 connects East County with San Diego, and runs north to the Canadian border through Riverside County.
The CA-94 connects downtown with I-805, the CA-163 connects downtown with the northeast part of the city, the CA-52 connects La Jolla with east county through Santee and CA-125, the CA-56 connects I-5 with I-15 through Carmel Valley and Rancho Penasquitos, and lastly the CA-75, or the San Diego Coronado Bridge, connects Coronado with San Diego.
San Diego Public Transportation
San Diego public transportation options include the San Diego Tolley, San Diego Coaster Express Rail, the Amtrak train, and the San Diego bus. The Trolley system serves downtown and the surrounding urban communities of Mission Valley, East County and the coastal South Bay. The San Diego Amtrak and Coaster trains go along the coastline and connect San Diego with Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernadino and Ventura via metroLink. The San Diego bus system is available along almost all major routes in San Diego.
The San Diego Trolley is the metropolitan area’s light rail system that was built and continues to operate trolley-style. The San Diego Trolley is a subsidiary of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). The Trolley was the first modern light-rail trolley system in California, as it launched on July 26, 1981 – and today it is the fifth most-ridden light rail trolley system in America.
The San Diego Coaster operates during weekday traveling and commuting peak periods with less stops and departures during the midday on weekdays. The Coaster also operates on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Special evening service is often offered when the San Diego Padres play home games at PETCO Park Monday-Thursday evenings.
The San Diego Amtrak Train offers sleeping accommodations and meal and dining options in addition to onboard smoking, onboard entertainment and cell phone access. There are six Amtrak stations in San Diego including Sorrento Valley, Old Town, Union Station, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Solana Beach.

The Central Courthouse still remains in its original 1870 location and houses the Superior Court’s Criminal Courts, Family Support and the Sheriff’s Office.
